Video Encoding Tools

Post by Mad Man »

Here are some tools I find very useful when working with video files. They are all free unless otherwise marked.
  • MKVToolNix - Wide variety of tools to work with Matroska MKV video containers. View, Add, Delete, or Edit video tracks, audio tracks, subtitle and chapter information, de-muxing and re-muxing, but it lacks video conversion options it seems.
  • Clever FFmpeg - GUI for working with FFmpeg. Can be used to extract or multiplex video tracks, and convert videos. I find this useful converting 10bit HDR video to 8bit easily which isn't an explicit option in many other tools that I've seen. Interface is a bit strange IMO but it gets the job done. (requires FFmpeg)
  • Avidemux - Describes itself as a video editor designed for simple cutting, filtering and encoding tasks. There are tons of encoding options available.
  • MakeMKV - Tool to backup Bluray videos to MKV files.
  • Handbrake - Open source video transcoder. Not sure if it can do anything the other transcoders on this list cant, but it's a nice tool for encoding.
